The Oncology Urgent Care Unit (ONUC) is a unique space within the Odette Cancer Program. For medical oncology patients, this specialized unit provides comprehensive, wraparound care to address urgent and complex needs during their cancer journey, like treatment side effects and other acute health concerns.
With increased access to cancer-specific expertise and resources, the ONUC helps ensure that medical oncology patients get the right care at the right time. Even seemingly minor issues like fever, nausea or dehydration can signal serious complications that require immediate attention.
Time couldn’t be more important during the most difficult days.
One day, when Sandy spiked a fever that wouldn’t subside, Rosemary knew that her sister needed emergency care. While that would typically require a trip to the Emergency Department – a serious concern for an immunocompromised patient – having access to the ONUC meant that Sandy was able to receive highly personalized urgent care, tailored follow-up treatment plans and avoid unnecessary exposure to other patients.
That’s why the Oncology Urgent Care Unit model makes such a difference.
After facing cancer with courageous strength, Sandy Walker passed away in October 2024. In her honour, Rosemary continues to carry forward a legacy of gratitude, advocacy and community fundraising, determined to help more patients and their families access the remarkable level of support, comfort and individualized care that makes the Oncology Urgent Care Unit so special.
